An afternoon of hard-hitting fiction from six of Scotland's finest short story writers. Featuring Carol McKay, Raymond Soltysek, Ross Wilson, Donal McLaughlin, Karen Jones and Andrew McCallum Crawford.

ABOUT THE WRITERS

Carol McKay’s poems and short fiction are widely published in anthologies and magazines such as Gutter, Mslexia, Istanbul Review, and From Glasgow To Saturn. She won the Robert Louis Stevenson Fellowship in 2010, and the Booktown Writers’ Short Story Competition in 2012. She teaches creative writing through The Open University.

Raymond Soltysek is a teacher, teacher educator, hillwalker, consultant, music nerd, blogger, student and occasional writer. His first short story collection was nominated for the Saltire First Book award, and the film of his first screenplay won two BAFTA awards. He is also a Robert Louis Stevenson and Scottish Arts Council award winner. He lives in Inverclyde.

Ross Wilson was raised in Kelty, a former mining village in West Fife. A recipient of a Hawthornden International Fellowship, his poems and stories have appeared in many magazines and anthologies, including Anon, Edinburgh Review, Gutter, Horizon Review, New Writing Scotland, Northwords Now, The MacCallan/Scotland on Sunday Shorts, and others. His first pamphlet collection, The Heavy Bag, was published in 2011 by Calder Wood Press. A full collection, Line Drawing, will be published by Smokestack Books in December.

Donal McLaughlin writes short stories and translates novels. His first collection, an allergic reaction to national anthems & other stories (2009), was long-listed for the Frank O’Connor Short Story Award. A much-praised second collection, beheading the virgin mary, and other stories, followed in 2014. As a translator, Donal was shortlisted for the Best Translated Book Award (USA) in 2013, and awarded the Max Geilinger Prize in 2015 for his translations of Swiss fiction.

Karen Jones writes flash and short fiction. She’s had success in competitions including Mslexia, Flash 500, Words With Jam and Ad Hoc Fiction. Her work has appeared in numerous magazines, ezines and print anthologies, most recently in Lost Balloon, Nottingham Review, and Flash: The International Short-short Story Magazine. She judged the 2018 Federation of Writers (Scotland) Flash Fiction competition and was a reader for TSS Publishing.

Andrew McCallum Crawford is from Grangemouth. His stories have been published in many places including Gutter, Northwords Now, Interlitq (Argentina), B O D Y (Czech Republic) and The Ofi Press (Mexico). He has written two collections of short fiction, The Next Stop Is Croy and other stories and A Man’s Hands. He lives in Greece.
