Kettle of Kites is at its core a project based on the compositions of Tom Stearn: lyricist, guitarist, and singer of the group. Through various incarnations (from its experimental stages in Austria and then in Scotland – where Stearn was also part of the bands ‘Admiral Fallow‘, ‘Open Swimmer‘, and ‘Bear Bones‘) the group reached full fruition with the consolidation of band members from various parts of the diverse European music scene — Pietro Martinelli (double bass and electric bass), Marco Giongrandi (guitar, banjo and vocals) and Riccardo Chiaberta (drums).

Loan is the debut album of the the Scottish-Italian band Kettle of Kites. Nine songs uniting acoustic and electronic moods with bold rhythmic and dynamic diversity, a diversity which is reflected in the varied international roots of the bands members and influences.

Recorded in Genoa, Italy, the album was then sent to Australia to be mixed by Ben Talbot-Dunn and Nick Huggins at the studio ‘a pocket full of stones’. The international nature of the album’s creation adds to the rich variety of the instruments used, from double bass and lute to banjo, strings and brass, which translate into a depth of sound, expansive in color and ambition. In describing the songs one can hear elements of folk, indie-rock and alternative music, with echoes of classical influences, all of which is englobed in an atmosphere suffused with intimacy.

““Loan” is one of those albums which takes you on a journey without leaving your seat, taking you away to find yourself at the north of the continent without having planned to, and which puts to one side any self-praise to dedicate itself completely to its listener. Basically an album that hit the spot.” Rockit “The opening song Loan is true emotion, transmitted by a true talent – and this emotion can be just as strongly felt in songs such as Bow, Blow the house down and Borderline. The melodic ideas, the vocals, the guitars and strings leave you open mouthed and I guarantee you won’t find anything like this from Italian artists” La Caduta
