Shy One (Bbz London):
Mali Larrington-Nelson, a DJ and a producer, is 27 years old, but already she's been involved deeply in music for nearly a decade. It began for her in 2003, just as grime was emerging as a musical force and having its “wot u call it” moment. Just a year later she began to play with Fruityloops, trying to find her own sound within the spectrum of grime. Undeterred by those who called her beats “weird” or “different”, Mali disguised herself behind the Shy One alter-ego, putting her beats online with only a cartoon face to identify the artist. Now unconstrained by anyone's demands, she has been able to hone a distinctive sound that keeps the lo-fi punch and quirky synths of grime but explores her funkier instincts through house rhythms and varied tempos.

2017 has been nothing short of incredible for Polonis. The 20-year-old producer has muscled his way to the forefront of the instrumental grime scene in Scotland and beyond, working with an ever-growing list of MCs varying from Glasgow’s Chrissy Grimez (“Slice Roll”) to London firebrands YGG (“Fruit Salad”, “Grinding”) to remixing legends like Flirta D («Warp Speed 2»). He founded Evilset, a collective of like-minded DJs, alongside MJK and Hermz; soundtracked a round of Red Bull’s Grime-a-Side; and released the star-studded Beat Roots mixtape alongside Rapture 4D, which features appearances from Manga, Discarda, Capo Lee and more. The year ahead looks very promising.
SARRA WILD (OH141, Grassroots Glasgow):
An educator, promoter, and a DJ — Sarra Wild is a prominent name in the Glasgow club scene. Her unapologetic challenging of the white-straight-men-dominated electronic music scene reflects perfectly in her selection — going to the root of the genre, being it R'n'B, dancehall, house — she creates a narrative in her sets that takes us through the original sounds of the genres, mixing it up with the gems from up and coming producers and absolute bangers the crowd goes wild to. As a mastermind behind OH141 and a co-founder of Grassroots Glasgow, she has opened the door into the industry for many marginalised DJs and artists in Glasgow and beyond; as well as bringing such acts as Gaika and Pan Daijing to play alongside local artists.
