54 Bell Street, G1 1LQ Glasgow, United Kingdom
In the 19th Century the pioneers of the modern-day chain stores developed their own corporate livery for their premises and recognised that the presentation of their shops in terms of display, lighting, design and comfort was of crucial importance in attracting customers.

Dr Lindsay Lennie will present her research into the surviving legacy of James Duncan’s distinctly Scottish tiled shops and their condition, location and vulnerability.

John Sanders, from Simpson & Brown Architects will talk about the Willow Tea Rooms, the most famous of Kate Cranston’s Glasgow tea rooms designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, where Miss Cranston’s emphasis on quality decor and high standards of service defined public expectations of what a tearoom should be.
