The 1866 City of Glasgow Improvement Act launched the most comprehensive plan of civic improvement in the nineteenth century.

Thomas Annan’s evocative images in The Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow created between 1868 and 1871 as part of a commission from the City of Glasgow Improvement Trust, document the impoverished living conditions of the working class at the time.

Simon Walker joins us from the University of Strathclyde’s Centre for the Social History of Health & Healthcare to explore public health in Glasgow in the 19th century and beyond. While Professor Brian Evans, Head of Urbanism at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, will focus on the City Improvement Act and it’s impact on Glasgow’s built environment.
