Architecture, Material & Contemporary Sculpture:
Relationships, questions and challenges to perception, value and meaning

Board room, 2nd floor, Whisky Bond Building, 2 Dawson Rd, Glasgow

Please join us for three fifteen-minute presentations followed by an open discussion about the role of architecture buildings and places as inspiration, content and context for sculpture.

Claire Barclay is a visual artist recognized for producing large-scale sculptural installations created in response to specific artifacts, craft and industrial practices, methods and places of production, her work explores the role of materials and functionality, combining specially made elements to evoke thinking around the psychological relationships between human beings and the objects that we produce.

James McLardy‘s sculptures embrace, misdirect and abstract ideas and form from architecture. Dressed up in fake-façades these forms and fragmented arrangements forge unstable material relationships. Highly detailed and apparently hand-labored the forms and surfaces represent his interest in questioning notions of aesthetical and materialist authenticity through quizzical and sometimes comic means.

James Rigler works in clay and everyday materials to create familiar but ambiguous objects and environments. Stealing details from architectural forms and decoration, Rigler’s work collides references to the everyday with the monumental, often playing with visual similarities between disparate sources. By challenging the usual signifiers of the hierarchy of objects, his work seeks to question the values that lie behind such distinctions.
