Ever wonder who’s who in the grand pantheon of Hindu mythology? Ganesha, Shiva, Hanuman, Vishnu? How does this cast of characters and their stories influence our down dogs and why are some poses named after them?
Hinduism is the oldest belief system in the world and it is the foundation of the yoga that we love and practice. Within a dynamic vinyasa flow story telling class, we will focus on two ancient myths: Hanuman (The Faithful One) and Vira Rasa (The Essence of the Warrior). In doing so, we will scratch the surface of the vast Hindu belief system and explain how the historical roots of yoga are directly connected to the modern day yogi—YOU!
Jai Hanuman — The Faithful One
Friday 15th September 6-8.30pm
Hanuman is personified in Hindu mythology as a monkey that is deeply devoted, courageous and committed to his beloved Ram and Sita. There are many stories that depict Hanuman rising up to save the day via his strength and perseverance. In yoga asana Hanumanasana is split pose and can be very challenging for our Western bodies due to tight hamstrings and hip flexors. Throughout this practice we will learn the back story of how Hanuman came to be the monkey god while slowly building the strength and flexibility needed to embody our personal version of Hanumanasana in its physical and emotional forms.
Vira Rasa — The Essence of the Warrior
Saturday 16th September 2-4.30pm
The archetype of the Warrior embodies the energy of devotion, focus and commitment. This energy is grounded in grace, confidence and respect. The yogic texts personify these attributes through the story of Shiva’s side kick and best friend, Virabhadra. In this dynamic story telling flow we will highlight the many attributes and expressions of Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose). We will observe, explore and connect with the different qualities and manifestations of our own warrior essence.
