Please note: We'll be starting at 7 rather than our normal 730 kickoff as we have a curfew to stick to!
Social media is struggling with an epidemic. Fake news spreads like a virus, with its ludicrous claims and compelling headlines. Some claim it cost Hillary Clinton the Presidency. Some say it has encouraged Britain to drastically alter it's political future. Others think it's just a bunch of opportunists running get rich quick schemes.

In a «post-truth» world, where we've had enough of experts and can prove anything with facts; what challenges must we address in order to combat fake news? As a Skeptic community, how does this affect us?

This talk will be presented by Newcastle Skeptics co-organizer Sam Hogarth. He is a software developer and Labour Party campaigner. As the proverbial intersection on the techno-politi-skeptical Venn diagram, he can provide an interesting confluence of perspectives and guide us through the murky maze of fake news. Alas, the answers to this problem are ours to decide. We're a group, let's work it out together.
This is event is free to attend, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn't end up in anyone's pocket — it is used to fund our overhead costs, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield.
Accessibility: The talk is on the top floor of the store, however there is however a lift available for customers to use.
Note, create events in both in our Facebook Community and our official Facebook page. This is because some members of the Group either haven't 'Liked' our official Page, and vice versa… so don't be worried if you think you're seeing double
